Hope everyone had a great Fall break and ready to get back to work. We will be starting our Animal unit and your child will be making an animal habitat. I sent home letters Friday before the break. The time line and requirements for the habitat are:
Important Dates & Project Timeline
October 19: Project officially begins in class (Animal selection & research).
October 26: Diorama guidelines & rubric sent home; home construction may begin.
November 6: Essay Rough Draft Due (completed at school).
November 13: Essay Final Draft Due (completed at school).
November 16: Completed Diorama Due (brought to school).
November 20: Parent Exhibition Night / Student Presentations! (Time details to follow)
Diorama Checklist
When working on the diorama at home, please ensure it includes:
[ ] A sturdy base (such as a shoe/carboard/plastic box between 9x6 to 14x10).
[ ] A background showing the biome/environment (drawn, painted, or constructed).
[ ] At least 3 natural features represented (e.g., water source, shelter, plants/trees, rocks).
[ ] The chosen animal featured clearly in its habitat.
[ ] Creative use of materials and clear STUDENT effort.

Spelling Words for week of October 19
Students will be working on rules for plurals (-s, -es, and when to change y to i and as es). The words are:

Spelling Rules and Parent tips:
Rule 1)Standard just add -s: for most regular base words ending in a consonant or vowel add -s (service-> services; consumer->consumers)
Rule 2: When words end in s, x, z, ch, sh (hissing sounds) add -ed (tax->taxes; speech->speeches)
Rule 3: Change y to i and add -es; When a word ends in a consonant + y you change the y to an i and add -es (berry->berries)
Rule 4: leave y and add -s; if the word ends in a vowel + y, leave the y and add -s (monkey->monkeys)

Grading, Test, and Work Policies
Assessments- 50%
Unit assessments will happen at the end of each unit, with a total of 11 or 12 depending of the class. Retakes are an option, I will average the score of the 2 tests. Retakes must be done with in 5 school days of the original test day.
Participation- 15%
Based on engagement, preparation and respectful behavior. Students will be expected to participate in classroom discussions, presentations and debates.
Homework/Classwork- 35%
Student's need to complete digital and traditional work. Late work will be accepted up to the end of the unit for which it was assigned. 1st day late automatically deduct 10%, there will be a 50% deduction if turned after the Friday of the week it was assigned. Once the unit ends it will be a 0.
Extra Credit will be available upon request. Requests must be made with enough time before the end-of-quarter grading deadline, no less than 2 weeks before deadline. Assignments will be based on specific academic topics.
