Lots is happening the next couple of weeks. Next Friday, the 18 we have music program at 10:30. The 22nd of September we have picture day. Parent teacher conferences are September 30 and October 1st. Followed by Fall break from October 5-16.

Spelling Words for week of September 21

We are continuing working on trigraphs, 3 letters that make 1 sound. These can be confusing because you don't hear all the sounds. Learning the rules help.
-TCH rule: Use tch right after a single short vowel in a one-syllable word, and use ch everywhere else
-DGE rule; no English rule ends in j so it is dge or ge. Use -dge right after a short vowel sound, and use -ge after a long vowel sound, a consonant, or a vowel team.
-IGH tips: use -igh when the long "i" sound comes before the letters t (as in light or night) or at the end of a short root word (as in high)
Make sure the kids know the rule so they know which one to use.

Reading for Week of September 21
Daily Topics-Novel "The Reluctant Dragon". As a class we will be reading this book and discussing different literary topics.
Monday-Read the 1st 10 pages. Vocab, comprehension questions
1) Baneful: a person or thing that causes great trouble, suffering, or punishment
2) scourge: harmful, destructive, or cause of great distress
3) placid: peaceable, fond of quiet and reflection; not inclined to fight
4) Downs: high, rolling grassy hill country (specifically in southern England)

Grading, Test, and Work Policies
Assessments- 50%
Unit assessments will happen at the end of each unit, with a total of 11 or 12 depending of the class. Retakes are an option, I will average the score of the 2 tests. Retakes must be done with in 5 school days of the original test day.
Participation- 15%
Based on engagement, preparation and respectful behavior. Students will be expected to participate in classroom discussions, presentations and debates.
Homework/Classwork- 35%
Student's need to complete digital and traditional work. Late work will be accepted up to the end of the unit for which it was assigned. 1st day late automatically deduct 10%, there will be a 50% deduction if turned after the Friday of the week it was assigned. Once the unit ends it will be a 0.
Extra Credit will be available upon request. Requests must be made with enough time before the end-of-quarter grading deadline, no less than 2 weeks before deadline. Assignments will be based on specific academic topics.
